Bangladesh: at least 29 people arrested for attending banned LGBT meeting
At least 29 gay people have been arrested in Bangladesh on charges that they attended a secret meeting for the LGBT community.
Jahangir Hossain Matabbar, commanding officer of the country’s Rapid Action Battalion, which was part of the raid on the outskirts of Dhaka, said the people were detained “for homosexuality and consuming illegal drugs.”
According to Matabbar, the police were tipped off about the meeting leading to the raid, during which they recovered drugs and condoms, reports News.com.au.
He added that the participants organised regular meetings through social media.
Homosexuality is illegal in Bangladesh. The penal code provides for sentences of up to life in prison.
